Anytime you feel unsafe on campus, you should distance yourself from the situation as much as possible and contact Campus Safety. If necessary, we would advise you to locate the nearest office, shut the door, lock it, and contact the MACU Police immediately. In the event of any dangerous situation, please locate the nearest exit and head to the MACU Police department in the Fowler Center. Please do not worry about your job, and go with what you feel is right.
You can reach Campus Safety the following ways:
- By phone at 405-692-3100. If someone nearby is making you uncomfortable, you can just ask in a polite tone that the officer come do a 'walk through,' or go into further detail if you are able to.
- By text at 405-694-5242. Please be advised that this may be the most discrete way to contact PD without anyone noticing. However, it is also the slowest, so please call if you do not receive a quick response.
- You can download the "Safe Zone" app on your phone's app store. This will allow you to make an emergency call, or send an emergency alert. This app is free for all students, faculty, and staff.
Shift Warning: If you have a night shift, please contact Marsha immediately, 24/7, if the back doors are not locking after 5pm or on the weekend.
A few extra tips:
- If someone is making you uncomfortable, trust your instincts.
- PD may already know the person in question and be more familiar with their situation than you, so don't hesitate to reach out.
- There is safety in numbers. If anyone else is in the library, put yourself close to them so you are not alone, and so they are aware there is a situation.
- Whenever possible, avoid escalating the situation by remaining calm with a pleasant voice.
- If you ever need to contact PD, be sure to notify Marsha afterwards so proper follow-up steps are taken.
